Hiking - Walking: Menthieres Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny and mild Max Speed: Distance Covered: 4.68 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Monday 18th February – Snow shoe ***** Menthieres including Les Huskys in
France – sunny and mild.
3 hours 40 minutes out, 4.68 miles covered.
Shared our little lay-by with a French campervan which came in late in the
evening and were too hot under two quilts last night as a little milder.
We woke to dense fog which soon cleared to leave yet another clear blue
sky:) Mag did her exercises again in the warm morning sunshine and then
went for a walk around the resort while I made the bed. We needn’t have
worried about skiing yesterday thinking that Menthieres was only open three
days as the lifts were running today and the bottom carpark was filling
fast. We are thinking that it is French half term so are now a bit
concerned that Lelex will be busy, we will see tomorrow? Mag packed a
picnic as I sorted out the snow shoes and we headed off at 11.15. We have
walked here from the ski area to the left on a previous visit. So, this
time we walked down from our parking space, past the farm buildings in the
opposite direction to the ski resort. We had seen people snow shoeing here
and it turned out to be a well-trodden path with several question boards
designed with kids in mind. The path rose up into beautiful, mainly beech
tree, woods but the only wildlife was the odd Great Tits and Ravens. The
forest track then turned right under the fizzing pylons as we turned back
but we were a lot higher up. We then saw a lovely dark red squirrel, almost
black, whizz past, much too quick for me to take a picture. We cross some
large snow fields and met up with the Les Huskys snow shoe path from
Menthieres which we followed on and off for the rest of the trip. We come
across the cross-country ski piste and spot our neighbours ski past and
then a walker, the first people we had seen close up since leaving the
van:) We do a small loop around the cross country piste, passing some nice
old farm buildings with an impressive wood store. Then we cross the Lelex
road which is usually closed due to snow but it looks open so might try
this route tomorrow? The path continues away from Menthieres as we look for
the spot, we had a picnic the last time but didn’t see it and, in the
end, found a great spot on a large log with a fantastic large tree nearby
looking stunning set again the deep blue sky:) Refreshed from our rolls,
chocolate bar and banana it was just a case of following the cross country
piste back. We had been out 3 hrs. 40 minutes covering 4.68 miles and it
was time for a cuppa and apple puff. Our neighbours were back from their
cross-country skiing and soon left leaving us here by ourselves:) The only
downside was a local farmer leaving his tractor running nearby ruining our
ambiance with diesel fumes but after giving his tiny Grandson a short ride
he left. Mag filled the water bottles from the tap down the road, then the
usual read, knit, puzzles before yummy pasta for tea. Another nice sunset
and a bit more wind tonight but the weather seems set fair for a few more
days yet:)
